As places where knowledge is collected and disseminated, libraries in today’s modern urban societies are increasingly turning into platforms that bring people together and encourage a productive exchange of knowledge. In 2018, we joined with Berlin’s Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB), the Kulturstiftung des Bundes and Aarhus Public Libraries to organise the four-day Berlin instalment of NEXT LIBRARY®, one of the world’s most innovative and successful conferences of its kind in the library sector.

We also cooperated with the interdisciplinary team at raumlabor, a Berlin-based design studio, to set up a temporary library campus made entirely of wood, which served to playfully spotlight the workshop character of the international conference. The campus’ unique architecture incorporated the inner-city environment surrounding the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (America Memorial Library), a listed monument, while also drawing on themes associated with the future of libraries in urban society and expressing the creative potential of the city of Berlin. The “showroom” section of the wooden campus invited the public to gain hands-on experience with innovative new designs and also to get a glimpse of the library of the future in a “pop-up library”. The conference came to an end with a well-attended library fest that was open to the general public.
