Twenty-five years later, in October 2012, when Berlin held its 775th anniversary party, it marked the first time since the fall of the Wall that all Berliners from Zehlendorf in the west to Marzahn in the east were able to celebrate a major anniversary together in a united, open and culturally vibrant European capital. The State of Berlin gave us the task of creating, organising and carrying out the celebrations surrounding the city\u2019s 775th anniversary, and we took the opportunity to reflect on Berlin\u2019s unique history and wealth of diversity. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-md-offset-3 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"box\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<read-more inline-template>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"copy_read_more copy\" ref=\"body\" style=\"height:0;overflow: hidden;display: none;\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p>For many centuries now, Berlin\u2018s identity has been shaped and inspired by immigration and cultural exchange, so we decided to place the focus on the history of migration in the form of a large-scale open-air exhibition titled \u201cCity of Diversity\u201d. The exhibition was set up on Schlossplatz, an historical location that was once home to the GDR\u2019s \u201cPalast der Republik\u201d (Palace of the Republic) and where the Humboldt Forum stands today. Another open-air project, which consisted of 500 \u2018floor texts\u2019 and exhibition towers set up at prominent locations in the centre of the city, conveyed Berlin\u2019s history during the Middle Ages to a broad public. The map traced 800 years of migration by drawing on several authentic immigration stories. Visitors were invited to stroll through the space and learn more about the fate of immigrants to Berlin\u2019s shores, including stories of exclusion, persecution, deportation and displacement.
