PRESS RELEASE | Anniversary Week Opens with Vitjitua Ndjiharine’s Art Installation “Memory Scripts” at the House of Representatives
The anniversary week “25 Years of Twin Cities Windhoek – Berlin” kicked off today with the Windhoek artist Vitjitua Ndjiharine and her art installation “Memory Scripts”, which will be projected onto the facade of the Berlin House of Representatives throughout the anniversary week. The artist also gave a speech at the opening ceremony, as did the President of the House of Representatives, Cornelia Seibeld, the Mayor of Windhoek, Ndeshihafela Larandja and the managing director of Kulturprojekte Berlin, Moritz van Dülmen.
The anniversary week curated by Kulturprojekte Berlin celebrates a city partnership that represents an active culture of remembrance and future-orientated collaboration. Until the 23rd of November, more than 30 events with around 40 cooperating partners and more than 100 participants from Berlin and Windhoek will be held all over the city. The programme is defined by diverse collaborations and community perspectives and focuses on contemporary art, culture, film and music, civil society dialogue, the creative industries, the sciences and archives. You can find all the events, most of which are free, here www.windhoek-berlin.com.
The video installation “Memory Scripts” was created especially for the anniversary programme by the multidisciplinary artist Vitjitua Ndjiharine. Her artistic practice deals will how identity is formed, how knowledge is produced and the legacy of colonial archives. To do this, she draws on a combination of different drawing and collage techniques and recontextualises archive materials. With “Memory Scripts”, she explores individual and collective memories and how they are interwoven as well as how the histories of Windhoek and Berlin are linked. The projection can be seen every day from 4 pm on the House of Representatives.
The Berlin anniversary programme celebrating “25 Years of Twin Cities Windhoek – Berlin” is being curated and organised by Kulturprojekte Berlin, on the initiative of the Governing Mayor of Berlin – Senate Chancellery, and in cooperation with a large number of partners. The programme in Windhoek took place in cooperation with the City of Windhoek, the Namibia Institute for Democracy and the Creative Industry Institute Africa. Made possible by funds from the Lotto Foundation Berlin.
